Wellbeing

Wellness Wednesday

Wellness Wednesday is held on the first Wednesday of every month in St. Joseph’s. It is an opportunity to focus especially on our health and wellbeing. In school, we do a wellness activity during the day…sometimes the teachers choose the activity and sometimes the pupils suggest the activity. Most importantly, on Wellness Wednesday children are given no written homework. This gives an opportunity to relax and enjoy doing something together as a family – walk the dog, bake, cycle, play a board game, skip, read a book together – the list is endless!

We all look forward to Wellness Wednesday in St. Joseph’s – teachers, parents and pupils!

Healthy Eating and Drinking

St. Joseph’s has a Whole School Food policy to encourage the whole school community – pupils, staff and parents – to make healthy food choices which support and enhance living and learning.

We encourage healthy lunchboxes, filled with appropriate portion sizes  of  ‘ready to eat’ lunch (eg. peeled orange)

We suggest you look at the food pyramid (see below) when thinking about your lunch and choose to include foods and drinks such as

  • Fruit or raw vegetables
  • Protein filled sandwiches or crackers
  • Pasta / rice
  • Cheese and yoghurt
  • Water

*We actively discourage foods from the top shelves such as biscuits, sweets, cakes, chocolate bars etc

We do not allow:

  • Fizzy drinks, high-sugar content drinks
  • Crisps and crisp products, flavoured popcorn
  • Chewing gum or bubble gum

**We do not allow foods to which a pupil has a known severe allergic reaction to be included in lunches of children in that pupil’s class

Sweet treats are given as one of a variety of treats/rewards in St. Joseph’s – pupils have an input into suggestions for alternatives to sweet treats.
